90 Minutes in Heaven – Movie Review

Movie Review- 90 Minutes in Heaven

Release Date: Tuesday December 1, 2015

Well there’s a first for everything right? I was asked to take a look at the new DVD release 90 Minutes in Heaven starring Hayden Christensen and give it my honest review for my readers… and I did! So this is my very first movie review — whoop whoop! Not only am I going to tell you what I think about this film and if you should spend 2 hours of your life watching it or not, but I also snagged an extra copy to give to one of YOU! Hip hip hooray! So keep reading to the end and see how you can win.

90 MINUTES IN HEAVEN, from Universal Home Entertainment, portrays a traditional family of believers in Jesus who’s faith is rocked to the core when Don, the husband and Pastor, gets into a horrific car accident that temporarily sends him to heaven.
This film also stars the beautiful Kate Bosworth, as Eva Piper, the wife of Pastor Don. Admittedly, I threw her character a little shade because at first sight she was presented as this skinty (not skinny, skinty) mom of 3 who’s makeup was perfect, not a hair was out of place, and she was fixing her well mannered children and Pastor husband a hot meal. How can I be her? How is her waist that small with young twin boys? But, reality quickly reminded me that I was watching a movie, not real life.
While her character’s put togetherness was enviable at first sight, Eva went on to prove that she was more than a pretty face, but was filled with unwavering faith, substance, Godly confidence, and a soft grace that all Christian wives should aspire to exhibit.
Through Don’s long recovery process, the film touches on some powerful Godly principles and themes that are worth highlighting:
  • There is power in numbers! When one finds themselves in a midst of a health crisis, call on fellow believers to fast and pray for you! It’s important to have a close circle of friends and family surrounding you to pray even when you find yourself feeling unworthy.

Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. James 5:16

  • There is power in a praying wife! Eva found herself looking at a mutilated resemblance of her husband after his car crash. Like most wives, we only desire to see the strongest form of our husbands, so to see her husband literally fighting for his life, she had to stand firm and declare the word of God over him. You will live and not die!

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11

  • Through her frustration, she honored her husband! Don’s recovery took months, and while he was in no position to make sound decisions for their family due to his vulnerable state, she continued to seek his wishes and blessings.

So again I say, each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband. Ephesians 5:33

Despite these great themes and messages presented in the film, I must warn you that this is not your typical Christian film produced by the Kendrick brothers (FireProof, War Room, Facing the Giants). Those films were entertaining while delivering life changing faith challenges that inspired and encouraged with a bang. This film, while faith-filled, was BORRRRING!!!! Like head jerking, nap taking, accidental slob type boring.  It was extremely slow with absolutely no humor, and the few attempts at jokes left me thinking, “was that supposed to make me laugh?” The title 90 Minutes in Heaven also elude that the film will explore the characters 90 minutes in heaven, and it does not. At all. Because of that I definitely questioned the title of the film. Why is it called this again? #confused

Overall, I give this film 2 out of 5 stars.

But, my opinion shouldn’t affect your desire to check it out for yourself! If you’d like to give this film your own review by winning your very own copy, comment below or send me an email at stephanielatia at gmail dot com and tell me in what ways your circle of friends and family pulled together to support you in a crisis. All comments must be received by Friday December 4th, 2015 by 11:59PM EST. A winner will be randomly chosen and contacted by Monday December 7th 11:59PM EST.

Until Next Time <3,

Stephanie

I'm married to my first kiss, my first love, my 5th grade sweetheart. I resigned from a fun, sometimes glamorous career in PR where I promoted and marketed major motion pictures for a living to be a stay at home mom! Well, being a stay at home mom was not my first goal when I resigned. I just wanted to do something different, more challenging, and more fulfilling. And God answered that prayer by blessing the hands of my husband so that I can be at home full time for our family. My blog will explore "My Life With These Kids" and all the aspects of "that life" :)

    1. Hello! I had the pleasure reading your blog. It was very interesting of the topic, different and fun. When I began reading the blog, the title 90 minutes in Heaven” stand out to me. I began imaging a man who died in the hospital and was able to meet with God, even though 90 minutes do not seem like a long time, but in this thought of mines seems like 7 days ;-), 7 days he had a one on one meeting with God, God provided him guidelines to come back to the world andstart his assignments. Lol I just created my own little movie.

To answer your comment “circle of family, friends, support” I am a firm believer in God, prayer warriors, faith and trust. I have a great support system from my closet memebers, my mother, sister, and church family. It is a peace of mind, and comfort for me. To know the people who worship the same God I do and understand that everything happens because it is upon God’s hands but he know what is best. The world puts fear in people, even today, without the system I think I would be lost.

      Thanks for the blog!

      1. Ha! I think you and I should get together and recreate this film :) Thank you so much for reading and for the comment, you are SOOO right about having a like-minded circle around you! I hope you win so you can take a look at the movie for yourself! <3
